Historical
Sites in Scotland
A small selection
of sites I've visited in Scotland. I'll be putting some pictures
and some more
histories about
the places in soon
Cairnpapple
Situated
in the Bathgate Hills, West Lothian, this ancient burial place was left
to
the whims of vandals for years, but it was renovated and is now a very
interesting
place
to visit.
Huly
Hill
A
bronze age burial mound, situated in Newbridge, West Lothian. It
can be seen
from
Newbridge Roundabout, on the west side. It is hardly noticed by the
people
driving
back and forward along the M8 motorway. Now that the the new by-pass
has
opened, most people don't see it at all. There are a few standing
stones dotted
about
the industrial estate, but you would probably have to ask the permission
of the factory
owners
to get in and see them.
Rosslyn
Chapel
A
christian place of worship in the village of Roslyn, Mid Lothian, which
contains at
least
150 stone carvings of the green man. You pay £2.50 to get in
and see the building.
A
lot of renovation work is going on and probably will be for some time.
There is a little gift/coffee shop, so take some money with you.
There are casts of some of the stone work, including some of the green
man. There is an elderly gentleman inside the chapel, who is an absolute
goldmine of information, nice to hear some of the history from him rather
than just looking at the guidebook. He has a strong feeling for the
place.
